{"id":184,"date":"2006-11-18T10:06:31","date_gmt":"2006-11-18T15:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profcutler.com\/wordpress_blog\/?p=184"},"modified":"2007-02-27T22:07:32","modified_gmt":"2007-02-28T03:07:32","slug":"why-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profcutler.com\/wordpress_blog\/?p=184","title":{"rendered":"Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some Israeli foreign policy figures&#8211;chiefly those linked to the Labor Party, including <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/servlet\/Satellite?pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull&#038;cid=1154525803832\">David Kimche<\/a>&#8211;want to try to pry Syria away from Iran.<\/p>\n<p>This idea is also popular with some Right Arabists in the US who want to break the Syrian-Iranian link in order <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/articles\/0,7340,L-3279899,00.html\">bring Syria back into the Arab fold<\/a> (recall that Syria backed Iran in the Arab-backed Iraqi war against Iran during the 1980s).<\/p>\n<p>There could be lots of reasons to want to court the Syrians (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/11\/18\/world\/middleeast\/18baker.html?em&#038;ex=1163998800&#038;en=81770f7d3af4da7b&#038;ei=5087%0A\">not all at the expense of Iran<\/a>).  One crucial reason might be oil.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to pipe oil to the Mediterranean from either the Kurdish north of Iraq it would be <em>very <\/em>helpful to have Syrian support, especially insofar as the Turks not so happy transporting Kurdish oil out of an increasingly independent Kurdistan.  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.utexas.edu\/maps\/middle_east_and_asia\/middle_east_pol_2003.jpg\">Look at a map<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just a thought.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some Israeli foreign policy figures&#8211;chiefly those linked to the Labor Party, including David Kimche&#8211;want to try to pry Syria away from Iran.
