{"id":74,"date":"2006-06-06T08:45:10","date_gmt":"2006-06-06T12:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/profcutler.com\/wordpress_blog\/?p=74"},"modified":"2007-02-27T22:24:03","modified_gmt":"2007-02-28T03:24:03","slug":"where-is-sadr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profcutler.com\/wordpress_blog\/?p=74","title":{"rendered":"Where is Sadr?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least one critical question emerges from my <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/profcutler.com\/wordpress_blog\/?p=73\">long post on Maliki&#8217;s Basra lockdown<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><em>Where is Sadr on the Basra lockdown?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">1. <strong>Sadr\/Yaqubi<\/strong>: the alliance between Sadr and Yaqubi (mentioned in my previous post) still holds and both are targets of the Maliki crackdown on Basra.\u00c2\u00a0 The Maliki\/Sadr alliance has already ended and the consequences will soon emerge: like Yaqubi\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Fadhila party, the Sadrists will withdraw from the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">2. <strong>Sadr\/Maliki<\/strong>: Sadr has sold out Yaqubi and given Maliki the green light for a crackdown on Fadhila\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s control of the Basra oil infrastructure.\u00c2\u00a0 The political isolation of Yaqubi\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Fadhila party is complete and the only resistance to Maliki\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s crackdown will come from Fadhila\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rank and file.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">3. <strong>Maliki Media Magic<\/strong>: there is no Basra lockdown worthy of the name.\u00c2\u00a0 It was all a publicity stunt for the benefit of the Sunni insurgency to show that a Shiite government would \u00e2\u20ac\u0153get tough\u00e2\u20ac\u009d on its own rather than (or prior to) any comparable crackdown in the Sunni-dominated Anbar province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">4. <strong>Solidarity Forever<\/strong>: Maliki and the UK will disarm Sadr\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mahdi Army and SCIRI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Badr Brigade\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand gently remove Fadhila\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rank and file from sensitive positions in the oil industry\u00e2\u20ac\u201dbut will do so in such an even-handed way that all parties will consent to the initiative.\u00c2\u00a0 The UK will establish a monopoly on the use of force.\u00c2\u00a0 Basra oil will flow like a mighty river into the waiting hands of International Oil Companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The betting window is now open&#8230; Place your bets!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least one critical question emerges from my long post on Maliki&#8217;s Basra lockdown: Where is Sadr on the Basra lockdown? 1.
